I would like to keep backups on several computers to prevent data loss. How can I do it?
There are two ways to implement this. First, you can create several sections for the same data set. Each section will put backups into separate directories. The drawback is that Backupper will run backup operation separately for each section, even though the data are the same.
The second way is to create just one section but specify several replication directories on different computers. In this case each backup will be created once and then it will be automatically copied onto several destinations. To specify replication directories open "Backups" page in section parameters dialog, set "Replicate to" checkbox and fill the appropiate edit field.
Sometimes some sections are backed up on Windows startup regardless of their schedules. Íow can I fix this?
Such behavior means that those sections were not backed up in time due to some reason (e.g., computer was off). In this case Backupper tries to create backup as soon as it is launched. If you want to prevent such behaviour you may use "Do not backup if time to next backup is less than ... " checkbox and edit field in "Options" page of the section parameters dialog.
My data are changed rarely but are very valuable. If I setup Backupper to back them up every day, most of backups will be identical. But if I setup to back up once a week/month, some important changes can be lost. Can I avoid both disk space waste and risk of data loss?
Yes. Backupper has options for preventing unnecessary backups creation. All you need is to open section parameters dialog, select "Options" page and set "Backup only if the data have been updated" checkbox. If this checkbox is set a new backup will be created only if the files have been updated since the latest backup. Backupper checks file properties (matching section template) and if some files were updated the backup is created. Otherwise automatic backup is not created (event is logged); Backupper will prompt for proceeding with manual backup. If the checkbox is not set Backupper will never check for updates.
Can I prevent some backups from being replaced with new ones?
Yes. Just make these backups stationary:
- start Manager;
- select the section in the section pane;
- select the backup in the backup pane;
- select "Backups - Make backup stationary" command.
Stationary backups are not deleted automatically but may be deleted manually.
Can Backupper back up data when the data files are opened by another application?
Yes, provided that the files are opened in shared (non-exclusive) mode.
But in case of backing up open files you may encounter the problem of backup data consistency. Some applications keep interrelated data in several files. For example, a database can have a file for storing accounting transactions and a separate file for storing account balances. If such data are updated during backup, a mismatch may occour. E.g., transactions file was backed up before entering a new transaction, while the balances file was backed up after the transaction has been entered. To prevent this enable the "Check backup data consistency" checkbox in section's parameters ("Options" page). If this checkbox is set Backupper will track files consistency during a manual or automatic backup and warn if the files were updated during backup. You may forbid creation of all inconsistent backups by setting "Put off backup if consistency check failed" checkbox as well. If both checkboxes are set, backup will be put off for the user specifed period and then the section will be backed up anew.
